What is FastForWord?

Fast ForWord is an Internet and CD-ROM based training program for individuals with language and reading problems. The product of over 25 years of research in neuroscience and neuropsychology, the program represents a revolutionary approach to language problems. In an intensive series of adaptive, interactive exercises using acoustically processed speech and speech sounds, the patented Fast ForWord technology simulates rapid language skill development as clients learn to distinguish the various components of speech. As clients move into the more challenging levels of the training, they develop enhanced phonological awareness. On average, children with language problems make 1.5 to 2 years of language gains after completion of the 4 to 8 week program.

Improvements include gains in language and reading skills, including auditory processing speed, working memory, phonological awareness, listening and reading comprehension, syntax, and grammar. As a result of this training, neural pathways for processing and understanding language are strengthened.

The program consists of 100 minutes per day of training, five days per week, under the supervision of a Fast ForWord certified professional. On-screen rewards for successful completion of training segments are supplemented with interesting token economy rewards, which are awarded with the achievement of point goals determined in conjunction with the client. Results from the exercises are uploaded daily via the Internet to Scientific Learning Corporation's consolidated data base for analysis and comparison with the client's progress to date. In addition to personally monitoring the client, the Fast ForWord professional can access the client's historical data online and can download interpretive summaries to use in consultations with clients and parents.

In the Fresno, CA metropolitan area the following programs may be used at my tutoring center or may be installed in your home computer.

	Fast ForWord Language is designed to appeal to children ages 4 to 12 years of age. The exercises are engaging, and the artwork is really charming with funny animals and circus characters. For many students, Fast ForWord Language is all that they need.
	Fast ForWord Middle and High School is a version of Fast ForWord that is designed for adolescents and adults using the same games as in Fast ForWord Language with a more mature background. Fast ForWord Middle and High School uses sports images or stories that appeal to teens and adults.
	Fast ForWord Language to Reading is a follow-up or stand-alone program that helps students further develop the language and reading skills critical for reading or becoming a better reader, but at a more challenging level. It also links language sounds to printed letters and words.
